HF DX Outlook: Stable Flux but Mild Geomagnetic Activity — Best Bands 20m & 17m (Jun 9, 2025)

DX Holiday

🌞 Space Weather & Propagation Overview (as of Jun 9, 2025 – 07:35 UTC)

  • Solar Flux Index (SFI): 115 — solid for DX performance
  • Sunspot Number (SSN): 87 — moderate solar activity
  • Geomagnetic Conditions: A‑index = 15 (active), Kp‑index = 4 (unsettled) — mild disturbance, manageable
  • Solar Wind Speed: ~497 km/s — slight enhancement in geomagnetic activity
  • Radio-absorption X-ray Level: B4.6 — benign
  • Bottom line: Solar flux and SSN are favorable for HF DX, but unsettled geomagnetic conditions may induce brief absorption or fadeouts.

📶 HF Band Conditions

Band Range (MHz)DaytimeNighttime
80–40 m (3.5–7.3)PoorFair
30–20 m (10.1–14.35)FairFair
17–15 m (18.07–21.45)FairFair
12–10 m (24.89–29.7)PoorPoor
  • Best DX opportunities: 20 m and 17 m remain your strongest bets around the clock. Morning and late afternoon on 40 m might surprise you.
  • Poor conditions: Expect weak openings on 10, 12, and (during the day) 80 m.

🗺️ Quick Path Check

  • Real-time maps (e.g., HF.dxview.org) show active MUFs, with occasional openings on 17 m and 20 m.
  • CW or digital modes performing better due to higher tolerance to noise — SNR > 10 dB for SSB, > –1 dB for CW.

🔭 VHF/UHF Note

  • Keep an eye on VHF activity maps for sporadic‑E or tropospheric enhancements — nothing unusual reported for today yet.

✅ Actionable Tips for Today

  1. 20 m & 17 m: Monitor these all day—likely best DX channels.
  2. 40 m (evening/night): Fair conditions could work for moderate-distance DX.
  3. Avoid 10–12 m unless MUF unexpectedly rises (rare with current flux).
  4. Use CW/digital modes to maximize success under current noise levels.
  5. Keep an eye on real-time propagation maps and adjust if solar conditions shift later today.

📡 DX Propagation Update – June 4, 2025

🌐 Geomagnetic Activity Overview

Over the past few days, Earth has experienced heightened geomagnetic activity due to a series of coronal mass ejections (CMEs) and solar flares. Notably, a G4 (Severe) geomagnetic storm was observed on June 2, triggered by a CME impact and intensified by high-speed solar wind streams from coronal holes. This event led to widespread auroral displays at lower latitudes and caused disruptions in radio communications and satellite operations.

📈 Current Conditions

  • Kp Index: Currently fluctuating between 4 and 5, indicating unsettled to minor storm conditions.
  • Solar Flux Index (SFI): Elevated levels around 160, supporting enhanced propagation on higher HF bands.
  • Auroral Activity: Still elevated, with potential visibility at mid-latitudes during nighttime hours.

📡 HF Band Conditions

  • 80m & 40m: Nighttime propagation remains stable, with some absorption during peak geomagnetic activity.
  • 30m & 20m: Variable conditions; openings are possible but may be short-lived and affected by geomagnetic fluctuations.
  • 17m, 15m, 12m, & 10m: Enhanced propagation expected, especially during daylight hours, due to elevated SFI.

🔮 Forecast

Geomagnetic conditions are expected to gradually return to normal levels over the next 24–48 hours. However, continued monitoring is advised as solar activity remains high during the current solar maximum phase.

  • VK9NT – Norfolk Island: Focus on low bands; challenging conditions due to recent geomagnetic activity.
  • CY0S – Sable Island: Limited operation windows; check cluster spots for real-time updates.

🏆 Upcoming Contests

  • ARRL June VHF Contest: June 14–15; excellent opportunity for grid hunters and VHF enthusiasts.
  • All Asian DX Contest (CW): June 21–22; focus on Asian stations, great for DXers seeking new entities.

📡 HF Propagation Forecast – June 1–3, 2025

⚠️ Geomagnetic Storm Alert

G4 (Severe) geomagnetic storm is currently impacting Earth due to a coronal mass ejection (CME) that arrived earlier today. This is causing significant disturbances in the ionosphere, leading to degraded HF radio propagation, especially at higher latitudes.

📈 Solar Indices

  • Solar Flux Index (SFI): 164
  • A-index: 16
  • K-index: 7.33

📡 HF Band Conditions

  • 80m & 160m: Expect increased noise levels and potential signal fading during nighttime hours.
  • 40m & 30m: Variable conditions with possible short-term openings; monitor for sudden changes.
  • 20m–10m: High-latitude paths may experience significant degradation; equatorial and mid-latitude paths could see sporadic openings.

🌐 Regional Notes

  • Europe & North America: HF propagation is currently unstable due to geomagnetic disturbances. Operators may experience rapid changes in signal strength and quality.
  • Asia & Oceania: Similar conditions prevail; however, some southern regions may experience brief periods of improved propagation.

🌠 Aurora Alert

The ongoing geomagnetic storm has increased the likelihood of auroral activity at lower latitudes. Observers in regions as far south as Alabama and northern California in the U.S. may witness auroras tonight.
